Defilé de Mode

The 2010 Defilé de Mode was Eira Jones’ idea, and she did a brilliant job of organising it.

From 1200 on Saturday 19th June the crowds started arriving at Roquecor Salle des Fetes. More than 80 tickets had been sold, and tables were set – but a lot more people started arriving, and serving tables had to be turned into dining tables to accommodate the extra people enjoying an apero and a light lunch.

By 1300 the hall was packed, the music started, and the show began. Trevor de Vere Green and Haydn Burnham did the introductions. The first sensation was the appearance of the unmistakable figure of French Beauty Pageant legend Genevieve! Nobody who heard her introducing the glamour to come is likely to forget it! And then the show began.

The models had worked hard in rehearsal, and it showed. They looked like they were having a great time, the clothes looked wonderful and the audience’s enthusiasm was instantly obvious. By the end of the parade itself it was hard to see how it could have been more successful – but then we found out, as the audience packed round the racks of clothes for sale. Everything seen in the show was bought, and a lot of other clothes too. The team from the Beauville boutique managed to sell clothes worth over 500 €.

The final result?

We made a profit of 1,446 €.  Although our Roquecor shop is now closed till September, the Beauville one is open (details here) with more terrific clothes, books and bric a brac for sale.

So thanks to Eira, her models, and her team who acted as dressers. Thanks also to the luncheon team, Kate Bewick for the lovely table decorations, Gary Cross for the great music and Sarah Graham, without whose backstage skills the show would have been almost impossible.

We would like thank to our sponsors as well; they included (in no particular order) Intercave Agen, Le Grenier aux Artistes Roquecor, La Sirene in Montaigu de Quercy, and the Ceramic Café in Roquecor.

Anyone who’d like to see more photos of the show, and maybe even buy a print or two (any profits to LADC, of course) should visit Roquecor’s Café du Centre, where there is a book of photos on display.

We've added some more photos of the show here

Sold On Summer

The gardens at Cap del Pech, Roquecor, were packed on Saturday 22nd May when Kate and Alan Bewick held their "Vente d'Eté" for "Les amis des chats"

A large stall sold hundreds of plants and flowers, many grown specially by Kate but others donated by friends and members.

Both the "Les amis des chats" boutiques from Beauville and Roquecor had stalls where they sold books, glass and china, and there was also a stall selling cards, one offering baskets, a bric a brac stall, a chutney stall and even an author selling her book.

The other big attraction was a real English tea, with a huge range of traditional cakes and buns served at tables set up on the lawns. The weather was perfect and the result was a happy atmosphere as old and new friends chatted in the sunshine.

And the best result of all was that over 850 € was raised for "Les amis des chats" to help the association in its work sterilising stray cats, and finding homes for cats and kittens abandoned in Quercy.

STOP PRESS! Left-over plants were sold later, and raised a further 70 €. So the final total for the day is now  over 920 €. A big "Thank You" to everyone involved.

Book Sale A Best-Seller!

The "Les amis des chats" Grand Book Sale at Beauville (47) on Sunday 9th May was a great success, and raised more than 350€.

The damp and chilly weather meant it was held in a room next to the Tourist Office, which was crowded for most of the morning with people chatting about what we are doing as well as buying books.

Members and non-members came from a wide area, and while books in English were very popular, books in French sold steadily too.

It was good to see a number of Beauville residents visiting the sale, as we are currently in the middle of a sterilisation programme in the village.

Thanks to everyone who came, and particular thanks to the team of helpers, which included Carolyn and Charles Miskin, Stephanie Finn, Ros Blackburn, Marian Clarke, Liz Silvester, Gary Jores, Coral Arnold, Chris and Mike Lock and Maria Bird.

Grateful thanks also to the Beauville Tourist Office for the use of the room, and the village of Beauville for the loan of the tables we needed to display the books.
