Travelling With Your Cat |

Travelling with your cat in Europe A number of rules apply to travelling with your cat from European countries to France, or to enter another country from France.Your cat needs the following things:
To travel in Europe, identification by microchip is obligatory for all recently identified cats, and for any cats to enter Finland, Ireland, Malta, Sweden and the UK. Identification by tattoo is only recognized outside France if it was done before July 3, 2011 except for the countries listed above which do not recognize tattooing as a form of identification, even if done before 03/07/2011. However, whatever the method of identification, it is mandatory that the number is legible and accompanied by the identification document. The identification must be done before or at the same time as the vaccination against rabies. ![]() Your cat can be vaccinated against rabies, after being identified. The animal must be at least 3 months of age for vaccination against rabies. Your pet can travel within Europe 21 days after the rabies vaccine has been administered. Booster vaccinations for rabies are given annually in France. Pet Passport Your vet will give you a European passport for your cat (see example right). The passport lists the owner's name and address and the details of your pet including the identification number, the date this was done and its location, the rabies vaccination, and other necessary information (see below). If your cat has come into France from a country outside the EU, you may also need an official veterinary health certificate issued from this country of origin. Other requirements Some countries stipulate additional requirements, for example, treatment against parasites a certain time before departure from France. This must be done by a veterinarian, who completes the appropriate page of the passport and certifies treatment. Your Route and Transport For the trip, you must ensure that any transport company you use (airline, ferry, etc) accepts pets, and if so, under what conditions. Depending on your destination country, you may have to use an approved route and an approved transport company. For example, to enter the UK, see the lists of routes and transport companies on the Defra web site at http://www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-pets/pets/travel/pets/routes/ Precautions For all trips, remember that the summers are becoming warmer. You must therefore take all necessary precautions when travelling with your cat. Use sunscreens on the windows, have water available at all times and remember to NEVER leave your car in the sun. Keep your window slightly open. An animal must not stay in a vehicle that is too hot. |
