New Laws on Pets Take Effect
Several new laws which affect cats have come into force at the beginning of 2012.

For details on new legislation on pet travel within Europe, and on identifying your cats and kittens, go to "Cat Health", and see the relevant pages. We also have downloadable fact sheets on these and other subjects.

Maumau, our January "Cat Of The Month"

This dynamic cat is Maumau. He obviously can be more active, as he seems to have sent us an e-mail last year.

Maumau, our "Cat iof the Month"He's also had an eventful life, like so many of the cats helped by "Les amis des chats", but we'll let him tell you his own story as told in his e-mail.

My name is Maumau, well that’s it now, I’m not sure what it was before because I was given to a boy as a present & in 2001 they moved & left me behind. I slept and lived in the field opposite the house hoping and waiting for them to come back for me.

They never did, but in sept 2005 my new daddies arrived. I think they love me coz I am spoiled so much, their language sounded so funny too start with but I have got used to most of it.

Hope you like the photo of me, meow meow ,,,MAUMAU

Our thanks to Ian Stewart and Steve for the photo (there's another in our calendar, and we still have a few copies of that available - see below) and for taking in a cat who needed help, and obviously doing such a good job of it!

There will be another "Cat of the Month" next month - it could be yours. Please send your photos to us at :

E-mail us your favourite cat pohotos to this address, please.

2012: Compulsory identification for ALL Cats

From 1 January 2012, any cat of 7 months or older, whether a pedigree or a simple "moggie", may by law need to be identified by microchip or tattoo. This is the proposal made by Nicole Bonnefoy, Senator for the Charente, who believes that the Act of 6 January 1999, Art. 276-2, requiring the identification of dogs and cats "prior to their transfer, whether free or at a cost", is much ignored.

The Bonnefoy amendment has already been passed by the Senate. It must still pass the National Assembly, which should be routine as the proposal has received a favourable opinion from the Law Commission and has government support.

Please note for 2012 - this law has now been passed
